Remembering ‘The Few’

On Sunday 11th September, St. Hilary’s Church, Wallasey hosted the second Wallasey Battle of Britain parade with 273 (Wallasey) Squadron from the Air Cadets present. Also present were Councillor Ian Lewis, as well as family and friends of the cadets.

The parade started at Wallasey Squadrons headquarters on Belvidere Road where the cadets and staff paraded toward and along Broadway Avenue carrying both squadron banners and the Wallasey and Birkenhead Royal Air Force Association standard.

The service commemorated 76 years since the Battle of Britain where the Royal Air Force, despite being outnumbered successfully fought off attacks by the German Luftwaffe. Cadets, staff and members of St. Hilary’s gave readings throughout the service with Rev’d Calum Piper commenting during his sermon that:

“The pilots of the Royal Air Force fought 75 years ago for peace, equality, freedom and joy, values which we as a community must still strive towards, being prepared to give as much as they did.”

The service also marked the completion of work that has been carried out by Wirral Borough Council on the War Memorial which was erected by the people of Wallasey Village within the churchyard after the great war. The PCC of St. Hilary’s are extremely grateful to council for the work that has been completed.

Flt. Lt. Andy Davies, Commanding Officer of 273 (Wallasey) Squadron said:

“Wallasey Air Cadets represent a selection of the youth of today and it was with great pride that we commemorated the Battle of Britain. The cadets paraded with extremely high standard and were immensely proud to represent the wider Royal Air Force family.”
